FEDERATION CON 17: THE LOST WORLD
My Review
Part Two

Why do they come?  What is it that they seek?  Who are they here for?  Have they found their answers?  This and many other questions have plagued the minds of both attendee and organizer every year.  FEDCON is the Mecca of sci-fi meetings.  It has shown the world for more than 16 years that in order to share an appreciation, rather than keep it within one’s soul, they need to find common ground amongst it’s constituents to share opinions and questions on common ground.  FEDCON has provided that.  Of course they can go elsewhere.  Over to England maybe or even to Holland but time and time again they have chosen Germany.

The second largest fan base for STAR TREK in the world is Germany.  Why?  Maybe it’s because they are of like mind of the philosophies that ST conveys on the inhabitants of this troubled world.  Fans are a very opinionated people but even through their complaints, fans agree with the other 26 countries in participation with this year’s event, that solutions MUST be found for our situations on this planet and sci-fi has given them hope of possibilities our nation’s governments have turned a blind eye to.  Thus the creation of a place like FEDCON.  Personally having been to the biggest and smallest of events like FC, it is the only consistent playing field for fandom I have discovered, only to be rivaled by an American event called DRAGON*CON.  It’s the best the Europeans have to offer and signing events alone are a massive waste of money so FEDCON is the grossly superior alternative.  And so they come.

WAS FEDCON MORE IMPORTANT THAN A BATTLESTAR GALACTICA PRODUCTION SCHEDULE?  Seems so.  Let me tell you a little story you may have heard already and it deals with 3 people”  Mary McDonnell, Mark Sheppard and Richard Hatch.  Never before in the history of conventioneering has a studio bowed down to the wishes of a cast.  Conventions are second to a career in television or motion pictures.  Contracts signed by actors to work on a series is a lot more tougher than a convention contract.  Actors could honor a contract on sheer respectability but to actually sue someone over a contractual obligation by a convention group would be both complicated and expensive.  So why do a contract with them at all?  Because of agreements between the two parties while an actor is actually “at” an event.  They can refuse one item and so can we.  We can revise another item and so can they.  Contracts are important and no actor will attend an event unless they had a contract to bind both parties.

Seems the BSG cast asked sternly but politely that they wanted to do FEDCON.  They asked to be released from production for the time they wanted to spend with the fans.  They felt FC was important to them.  They thought that they owed it to the fans and THAT has NEVER been done by any actor or actors for a convention in the 25 years I have been associated with worldwide events! Here’s the coolest part though.  The studios needed Mark Sheppard for his role in BSG and if they couldn’t have Jamie and Mary and Nicki and Richard, mark would have to stay behind.  They would have accepted those 4 and let Mark go to Germany but then we would only have Mark.  This great guy (Mark Sheppard) did what we call “falling on his sword” so that the others could come to Germany.  He sacrificed HIS attendance so that the others could come.  Now I don’t know about you but  I find that the coolest thing I have ever heard of from an actor and I can’t wait to invite him for next year so we could hear his side of the story.  Nonetheless, Mary and the others made it and Richard had a very important scene to film and had to stay behind also.  BATTLESTAR GALACTICA RULES!!!

COUNTRIES IN ATTENDENCE:  FEDCON reached an unprecedented number of countries attending its event this year.  25 traveled from abroad with the host country showing its constant hospitality once again. Those attendees were from AUSTRIA, BELGIUM, DENMARK, FINLAND, FRANCE, GREECE, IRELAND, ITALY, LUXEMBOURG, NETHERLANDS, UNITED STATES, NORWAY, ROMANIA, SLOVENIA, SPAIN, UNITED KINGDOM, MALTA, SWEDEN, SWITZERLAND, CZECH REPUBLIC, BULGARIA, CROATIA, SERBIA, ISRAEL, and of course GERMANY.  FEDCON entertains more worldwide attendees than any other convention in the world.

Bruce Boxleitner / Peter Jurasik:  Bruce and I have worked together a few times before in the states.  I’m also a huge cowboy fan so we had a lot to talk about all weekend at the event and at the castle dinner.  I am a big fan of his wife because of her role in the Screen actor’s Guild, having been its President and as little Laura Ingalls in LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE.  Peter the man.  WOW!  Both humble and funny as hell at a dinner table.  I loved him and G’Kar on B5 and spending time with him in the piano bar and all weekend sold me on his soul.  It’s genuine and sweet.

Steve Bacic: Whoa……I know we have had our share of drinkers and partiers but Steve ranks high on the list of party animals.  Dancing next to him on the dance floor on Thursday night and joking with him about anything was a hoot.  To see the three of them (Sorbo, Shanks, Bacic) hanging out together all weekend on and off stage was great.  They were definitely having a good time.

Nicki Clyne  A hip hop queen on the dance floor.  She really lit up the Saturday night party (not my favorite btw) and danced with Leah.  I was impressed with her form on the floor and told her that I thought she was upper eastside.  She understood me.
